ESA/Hubble/JWST Science Newsletter
29 May 2024

-By Chris Evans-

I’m writing shortly after the latest in our series of ESA-sponsored conferences on the science from the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. The conference was an excellent opportunity to hear some of the exceptional highlights from both missions, with a particular focus on the synergies between them, as well as with other ground-based and space missions. You can read more about the conference here.

The Porto conference was hot on the heels of the celebration of the 34th anniversary of Hubble’s launch. This year’s anniversary was marked by the release of a striking new image of M76, the Little Dumbbell Nebula. Hubble’s unique UV and visible capabilities remain in considerable demand, and a record 1056 papers were published using Hubble data in 2023, of which 409 were led by authors in the ESA Member States. It’s also worth noting that of the nearly 400 publications in 2023 that used JWST observations, roughly half also made use of Hubble data, illustrating how these two fantastic observatories are now regularly working in concert together.

Looking ahead to July, we would like to announce a ‘drop-in’ session for your questions regarding the JWST Science Calibration Pipeline at the upcoming European Astronomical Society (EAS) Annual Meeting in Padova. This will be held on 2 July 2024, and further details on plans for the EAS meeting are available here

Lastly, let me remind you of our European representation on the Space Telescope Users Committee (STUC) and the JWST Users Committee (JSTUC). If you, the users of Hubble and Webb, have questions or comments that you would like to raise with either of the user committees, please contact one of our European representatives.
