ESA/Hubble/JWST Science Newsletter

-By Chris Evans-

I have a couple of brief announcements to share as we draw into the final quarter of 2026. Looking ahead to next year, we are excited to announce our plans for the next ESA-sponsored conference on the Science with Hubble & Webb, to be held in Vienna, in April 2026. The topic of the conference is “Enriching the Universe: From Primordial Nucleosynthesis to Exoplanet Atmospheres”, and you can read more here. Let me also draw your attention to the latest and final JADES Data Release, DR4. The release contains NIRSpec spectroscopy of over 5000 galaxies in the GOODS-North and South fields, and further details are here

Now that the deadline for Webb’s Cycle 5 proposals has passed, I’m excited to see what creative ideas you, the user community, have for new observations in Webb’s fifth year of science operations. Many thanks to those of you who have kindly agreed to serve on the panels or as external reviewers for the Cycle 5 Time Allocation Committee. We really value and appreciate the commitment of both your expertise and time towards selection of the future science programme.

Let me also thank those of you who served on Hubble’s Cycle 33 Time Allocation Committee in June. Securing time was as competitive as ever, with General Observer time significantly oversubscribed by 6.5:1 for the available orbits. The European fraction of the approved programmes remained strong, with 23% led by PIs in the ESA Member States, for 19% of the total orbits. Many congratulations to those of you with approved programmes! A report on the Cycle 33 proposal selection is available here, and observations for the new programmes will start in November.

JADES Data Release 4

27 October 2025: -By Emma Curtis-Lake (Hertfordshire), on behalf of the JADES Consortium- The JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) is a collaboration between the Guaranteed Time Observation teams of the NIRCam and NIRSpec instruments. The goal of JADES is to reveal the physical properties of galaxies in the young Universe, from when it was less than two billion years old up to …
