Hands-On Guide for Science Communicators released

17 January 2007

A new book on practical science communication has just been published by Springer, New York. Presented by an experienced science communicator, this work shows how to create the perfect marriage between science and communication. Drawing inspiration and examples from his years of experience in the field, Lars Lindberg Christensen from the Hubble European Space Agency Information Centre offers hands-on advice about some of the most central topics of practical popular science communication with numerous examples from physics and astronomy.

Aimed at both the general public and a more specialized audience – working as science communicators in a variety of communication offices in scientific institutions, the book provides the inspiration and the steps to become a good science communicator.

The hands-on guide offers practical advice on all aspects of science communication: product types, target groups, written communication, visual communication, validation processes, practices of efficient workflow, distribution, promotion, advertising, and much more. Extremely practical, the guide provides the necessary "shortcuts" to produce outreach products of high quality. All concepts are explained with simple terms and illustrative examples while check lists and short "to-the-point" overviews enable rapid progress and quick results.

The book does an outstanding job at bringing such different disciplines together in an easy and understandable way. The work emphasizes the value of science culture in our society as well as the need for properly qualified science communicators who are capable of addressing the needs of a rapidly progressing society where the knowledge gap between the average citizen and scientists is constantly increasing.

This book is thus an essential guide for new as well as seasoned science communicators looking for an insight into how to improve the science communication process in this era of rapid scientific advances.
