Call for Artistic Creations: Let’s Say Thank You to Hubble!

24 April 2020

While many of us are staying at home during these challenging times, ESA/Hubble is inviting you to get creative to help us celebrate Hubble’s 30th birthday!

On 24 April 2020, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope will be celebrating 30 years of science discoveries that have revolutionised nearly all areas of current astronomical research, from planetary science to cosmology, and its countless pictures are unmistakably out of this world.

ESA/Hubble has launched various initiatives to celebrate this special occasion, and the latest project invites the general public to submit Hubble-themed artwork. A selection of submitted artwork will be featured in future ESA/Hubble outreach activities.

Artistic creations of all kinds are encouraged. This includes drawings, paintings, photography, sculptures, and graphic designs that thank and celebrate the Hubble Space Telescope. Inspiration can include:

  • Hubble’s 30th anniversary
  • The Hubble Space Telescope spacecraft
  • Hubble’s scientific achievements
  • Hubble’s beautiful imagery
  • We also invite you to create your own idea for a Hubble anniversary image!

Submissions will be accepted from Hubble fans from all countries and of all ages.

At the discretion of ESA/Hubble, a selection of the submitted artwork received from the European Space Agency (ESA) Member States will be featured in a special announcement on SpaceTelescope.org, a special Hubblecast, ESA/Hubble’s social media, and dedicated albums on Facebook and Flickr.

Deadline for submissions is 31 May 2020 at 17:00 Central Europe Time.

We also encourage you to share your artwork online using #ThankYouHubble and #Hubble30!

Please read the complete rules and restrictions below.

Submissions are now closed. Please stay tuned to enjoy the Hubble 30 artistic creations!

The ESA Member States are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. By submitting an image to the competition, you confirm to the organiser that

  1. it was produced by you (i.e. it is your original work)

  2. it does not infringe the copyright or any other right of any third party

There is no restriction on the number of artistic creations submitted by any individual. Each entry will be considered separately.

By submitting an image of your artistic creations, you grant ESA/Hubble a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, publicly perform and publicly display your image, under the ESA/Hubble copyright rules described in http://www.spacetelescope.org/copyright/ (“Creative Common Attribution”), with credit to ESA/Hubble, your first name, age, and country.

Artistic creations are welcome from those of all ages and countries.

Submissions will no longer be accepted after 17:00 Central Europe Time on 31 May 2020.

Entries from those below the age of 18 must be submitted by a parent or legal guardian.

All data and information received from the submission form will be deleted by the end of 2020.

Submissions are welcome from all corners of the world; however, only those received from ESA Member States will be used for future ESA/Hubble outreach initiatives, including Facebook and Flickr albums, and Hubblecasts.

The selection of submissions received from ESA Member States that are to be featured in future Hubblecasts and ESA/Hubble outreach initiatives is at the discretion of a designated judging panel selected by ESA/Hubble.
